Stephen Ejaba, Samuel Eninu and their colleagues at Youth Action for Holistic Development work with traumatised and disadvantaged children in the Soroti area of North Eastern Uganda.  For some time they have used music and drama as a way of rehabilitating children into society.

As a result of our development programme in Uganda, they now also use sport.

The King’s Foundation has been able to support Stephen and Samuel in this amazing work through showing them how they can use sport as a way of developing children, physically, emotionally and spiritually.

We have provided them with ideas, games and sports equipment and they now use sport as a central method for rehabilitation.

Lord's Resistance Army

Many of the children Stephen and Samuel work with live in camps for internally displaced people because the notorious Lord’s Resistance Army has forced them away from their homes.  Stephen told us of a situation that had happened to a group of these children when he joined our leadership development programme in Kampala.

"One of the induction methods that the LRA use to initiate new captures is to send them on a long journey.  They send groups of children on an errand a few kilometres away.  Soldiers accompany the children.  The first child that complains of tiredness or thirst is shot by the soldiers.  The other children soon learn not to complain or ask questions.

Four weeks ago we received six children that had been rescued from the LRA.  The organisation that had rescued them sent them, in all innocence, to buy some sweet potatoes from a shop two kilometres away from where they were based.  On the return journey, one of the children complained of being tired.  The other children in the group killed the child."

In our relatively safe and secure environments, we cannot even begin to comprehend how children can behave like this.  It is even harder to comprehend the mindset of people that can brainwash children so that they behave in such a way.  Thankfully there are people like Stephen who do not see children the way they are, but the way that they should be.

The courage of them is highlighted in a recent email;

"We went Acoa IDPs camp again to clean the play ground but unfortunately two hours after we left, Obalanga camp was attacked and torched down by the LRA.  They again attacked Angica camp, yesterday they attacked Morungatuny camp but met the wrath of the Uganda army.  Please pray for people and children who are now suffering because of these recent attacks. Pray also our forthcoming mission there, Samuel"
